Artistic Traffic In Pakistan

It has been over 14 years since I last visited Pakistan and this is certainly something I do not remember although my mom is well aware of the tradition that dates back over 100 years. Literally every inch of a truck is covered with artistic design made by hand and then carefully placed onto the truck and each region has their own design to leave their mark and it certainly brings a roadway to life.

Here is the reporter’s first hand claim from her blog:

It’s my first trip to Pakistan, and one of the things that immediately jumped out is the trucks. I realize that sounds strange, but the trucks here are like no other I have ever seen. They are not lumbering and drab monstrosities but a canvas of spectacular and intricate art, a kaleidoscope of exploding colors. I am not one to have much patience for traffic, but here I could sit and watch the roads for hours. Each truck is unique, each a different combination of designs, poetry and other adornments.

What made the “truck art” even more intriguing was just how intricate it is. The designs are made up of tiny pieces of tape, all done by hand. The artisans’ fingers move at breathtaking speed and precision.

Arwa Damon, CNN’s Jakarta-based correspondent covering stories from Indonesia and the surrounding region, graduated from Skidmore College with a double major in French and Biology and a minor in International affairs was born in Boston but went on to spend most of her childhood in Morocco and Turkey. She is fluent in English, Arabic, French and Turkish which is certainly a very useful ability to communicate with the local populous.

It is certainly great to see a different perspective of coverage regarding the news from Pakistan and one that you rarely see here in the West.

Ctrl Alt Deli: Nerdiest In America?

A friend of mine over at RIT who was “slightly embarrassed” of the name just informed me of about the geekiest convenience store name. It is called Ctrl Alt Deli (pronounced “Control Alt Deli”) which recently opened up on the campus of Rochester Institute of Technology and I have no shame in admitting that I wished we had such a name on the campus of Stevens — unfortunately we are stuck with America’s Cup, a respectable name with historical significance to our campus but not nearly creative enough.

I find it hard to believe for a student who goes to an Institute of Technology school would not find such humor and creativity amazing. There was a contest held where the name was eventually selected from an entry by a freshman computer science major.

Also for a fan like me who loves DOS, I think its awesome that each menu page with a DOS line command “C:\> dir” that allowed you to see the available files in the current and/or parent directories which in this menu case allows you to see the sandwiches or wraps available in each section.

I Am The Captain Of My Soul.

It was not until maybe an hour ago that I completely understood the meaning of the newly released film called Invictus. Thanks to a good friend of mine, who for the sake of this post we will call Cindy Murray, for pointing out the fact that was the title of a poem that Nelson Mendela had written down on a scrap of paper while he was imprisoned.

This is a short poem by the English poet William Ernest Henley. It was written in 1875 and first published in 1888 in Henley’s Book of Verses and although it was initially untitled, the name Invictus was given to it by Arthur Quiller-Couch when he published The Oxford Book of English Verse in 1900.

In the movie, Nelson Mendela gives this hand-written poem to the captain of the Springbok although it has been claimed that he actually gave the captain with an extract from Theodore Roosevelt’s “The Man in the Arena” speech from 1910 that he gave in Paris – both of which are provided below.

Invictus:

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.


The Man in the Arena:

It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.

WordPress Update

Apologizes for the broken links around the blog currently but I recently upgraded to WordPress 2.9 and everything but the individual posts have transferred over. Trying to figure out what went wrong and have it fixed as soon as possible.

Hopefully, it doesn’t take too long.

Blog Recommendation – Predator Fitness

So I have been thinking about doing such a feature on my blog for a little while now and I have finally figured out a schedule for it. There will be more features added on as I develop a more scheduled routine but the first one is going to be a monthly blog recommendation. On the second Friday of every month, I plan to recommend one new blog that I will endorse not because someone told me to but because it is one I follow regularly and it is something you guys should read too.

PredatorFitness

The first recommendation is going to be of a blog called “Predator Fitness” started by a couple of kids who went to high school with me once upon a time. It is relatively new, started a couple of months back, and I just added it to my blogroll but it has some quality information for pretty much any lifestyle and how to go about it in a little bit more healthier and hopefully fitter fashion. Pulled straight from their About Us page, it states “Predator Fitness was created to provide our readers with an interactive site to share the latest workouts, health news, nutrition tips and exercises in order to become as functionally fit as possible!”

At first I wasn’t exactly sure how this blog would turn out but it has had pretty decent posts since its startup varying from different types of exercises to recipes to even one of the author’s personal recommendation on how to get over a cold/sickness in a matter of days.

Some of the stuff they say is common sense but its surprising how much of that ‘common sense’ stuff slips your mind unless it is constantly reinforced and certainly reading that in a blog or anywhere will help you during your day. I haven’t tried any of the recipes but there is a great post titled “How To Set Fitness Goals” which many people can attest to is one of the hardest things not only to set, but to maintain as well.

So if you are looking for a way to stay a little bit healthier and/or in shape this winter season, head over to “Predator Fitness” and give them a shot.
