Stevens Athletics Calendar – Now Available

This is completely unofficial so far and is not distributed through Stevens Athletics but from what the publicly available schedules for the teams at the Stevens Athletics web page states, I have created a .ics file that can be easily added to any calendar application (I use Microsoft Outlook) if you want to keep track of the Stevens’ Athletics events. To download the calendar, just simply click here: Stevens Athletics Calendar.ics

Also, watch several Stevens Athletics games that are broadcasted and streamed live on Empire8.tv. I will try to do as many games I possibly can but that might be difficult as I am away from campus for the fall as I complete my co-op semester. I know for sure that I will be doing Men’s Soccer games in the fall and definately the Men’s Lacrosse games and Women’s Basketball games that carry over into the spring semester next year but as for others, I make no guarantees right now.

As for the calendar, so far the only available schedules that I saw were the following:

Men’s Lacrosse
Men’s Soccer
Women’s Basketball
Women’s Tennis

Once again, to download the calendar, just simply click here: Stevens Athletics Calendar.ics

If Politics Was A Sport…

Got this from a friend earlier today…

Some in the media are declaring the series over because the Boston Celtics have won four of the six games played so far. But I don’t understand why, with a series this close and hotly contested, anyone would want to shut it down before we play a seventh game and have all the results in. As anybody who follows the NBA knows, a seven-game series would be good for the league, and the added competition would make the eventual victor, whomever it might be, a stronger opponent against the Los Angeles Lakers in the Finals….

Yes, Boston has won four games and Detroit only two. But it’s hard to imagine a more arbitrary and undemocratic way to determine this series’s outcome than “games won.” It is, after all, a bedrock value of the game of basketball that all points must be counted. But how can that be the case when every point beyond the winning point is ignored? There are literally dozens of layups, jumpers, free throws, and (yes, even) dunks that our opponents want to say don’t count for anything at all. We call on the NBA to do the right thing and fully count all of the baskets that were made throughout the course of this series.

Once you abandon the artificial four-games-to-two framework that the media has tried to impose on the series, a very different picture emerges, with the Celtics leading by a mere 549 points to 539. Yes that’s right, the margin between the two teams is less than one percent — a tie, for all intents and purposes. This is probably the closest Conference Finals in NBA history, though I will thank you not to check on that.

Stevens Coach To Commentate For NBC At The 2008 Beijing Olympics

Well this is some great news out of Stevens Athletics. I really did not expect to follow the fencing events but I think I am going to be watching some of them now to see Coach Sankofa and what he has to say. The original link to the article is here by Rich Coyne.

HOBOKEN, N.J. (May 20, 2008) – Head Coach Maestro Mika’il Sankofa of the Stevens Institute of Technology men’s fencing team has been selected as the NBC analyst for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. With over 30 years of experience in the sport of fencing, Sankofa was selected for his expertise as a competitor, coach and commentator at the national fencing competitions.

“This is really a tremendous honor and I’m really looking forward to calling the various fencing events,” said Sankofa. “America is sending some very talented athletes to the Olympics, and I’m looking forward to educating viewers – new to the sport – as well as bringing the excitement that Olympic fencing competitions always generate.”

A U.S. Fencing Hall of Famer and member of the 1984, 1988 and 1992 U.S. Olympic fencing teams, Sankofa will be calling the Women’s Individual Sabre event scheduled to air on the USA network on Saturday, August 9. Then on August 14, the Women’s Sabre Team event will be broadcasted on MSNBC followed by the Men’s Sabre Team event on August 17.

In 2007, Sankofa was featured in the NCAA’s 100-year commemorative book. He was recognized for having won four consecutive national championships as a New York University student-athlete marking his accomplishment as one of the 50 greatest moments in NCAA history. Furthermore, Sankofa has posted 34 wins through his four years as head coach of the Ducks. He recently helped to produce the first foilist in Stevens’ history to have advanced to the NCAA Finals.

Angry Brown… Horse? and Hal on Fox News

So yesterday was the 134th running of the Kentucky Derby and Big Brown just ran away from the field. I was around some Reading, Pennsylvania and totally missed the running but caught the race later. It was sad to hear when filly Eight Belles followed a sensational effort of her own to finish second by fracturing both ankles, falling to the track and being euthanized on the spot.

It’s certainly the fastest two minutes or so in sports and for those of you who did not get a chance to see it, i have attached it below. I know some people who say this is an awful sport and its understandable that they say it cause like me probably the only horse races they watch are the 3 major ones and certainly the news of Barbaro is still probably fresh in their minds. However, this seems like a really beautiful sport and honestly if I was bogged down in so many other things, I would probably watch more races.

In other news, Stevens Institute of Technology President Hal Raveche was on Fox News on the first of the month to talk about the struggling economy and what the foreign markets think of the falling dollar. He had interesting points which were countered by a professor from NYU and a couple of people from Fox News. He talks about innovation, preparing the students in his university for the world out there (coincidentally the arson incident is taking place about a week before when supposedly he was overseas.)

Donate 12 Angry Men For A Good Cause

Edit (06/30/08): Greetings to all those visitors coming from MyFamily.com. It’s a pleasure to have a whole bunch of visitors being referred from there and if one of you want to leave a comment regarding what the reference between my blog post here and something on MyFamily.com is, I would greatly appreciate it.

Original Post (05/02/08): Usually following each semester, I place my books up on Amazon and I did just that this semester and I have sold about half of my stuff but this recent one caught my eye. This semester I had taken a class called Political Science II in which we read a book that almost everyone knows or has heard of before called “12 Angry Men“. When I put this book up for a sale, a High School teacher from Portola, California reached out saying her public school did not have the funding to purchase textbooks so it was up to the teachers to get the materials. She asked how many copies of this book I had available and if I would be willing to send them her way at a discount rate or even donate the book(s).

Personally, I have no problem donating my copy even though that is the only one I have. I sent my professor an email earlier today to see if he could ask the rest of our class if anyone else that book lying around, collecting dust with no purpose to send it my way and I would donate those as well. Certainly those of you who are reading this and if you have a copy of 12 Angry Men (see below for book specifications) and want to donate, please let me know. Also, I have added a Donate button via PayPal on the right side bar and all funds collected in the span that these books go out, will help subsidize the cost of the books and shipping.

I have also enclosed the email that i received earlier today.

Hi, I’m a high school English teacher at Portola High School in Portola, CA, and we will be reading/performing the play “12 Angry Men” this quarter. My school has no funds for purchasing any classroom materials, so it is up to me personally to purchase any materials I need in my classroom. I’m writing today to ask if you would be willing to give a discount (or donate!!!) for “12 Angry Men” for as many copies as you have available. I have 60 sophomores, but no more than 20 in a class, so I really only need a total of 20 copies. Can you let me know how many new and used copies you have and how much you’d be willing to sell them for? Thank you so much for your consideration.

Detailed Information:

  • Title: 12 Angry Men
  • Paperback: 96 pages
  • Publisher: Penguin Classics (August 29, 2006)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 0143104403
  • ISBN-13: 978-0143104407

I have always been a fan of public education and since I was quite fortunate to have fantastic teachers in the 5 different public schools that I went to during my childhood, I am always willing to lend them a hand in anyway I can. I’m assuming the English teacher who contacted me wouldn’t mind so if anyone wants to donate the book directly, you can sent to the following address:
