Stevens’ Soccer Expects Big Things In 2008

This coming from a press release by the Stevens Athletics Department written by Rob Kulish:

The Stevens Institute of Technology men’s soccer team has set a precedent for success under head coach Tim O’Donohue. In seven-plus seasons at the helm, O’Donohue has led the Ducks to a 114-14-13 record and five straight appearances in the NCAA Division III Tournament, and 2008 should not be any different. Stevens returns eight starters and 18 letter winners from a team that won the Empire 8 Championship in its first season in the conference and went 17-1-3 overall.

An interesting note for those from around Edison, New Jersey or went to the Middlesex County Academy high school located there that Forward Mykel Pereria “will also push for some time on the front line as the season progresses” for the Stevens Ducks. Personally, I can’t wait to broadcast his games as I have seen him develop over the last four years and certainly he can be a great asset up front along side Terrance Johnson who scored 14 goals last season and led the team in both goals scored and total points (29).

The Ducks open the 2008 season by hosting the Stevens College Cup as the Ducks will take on No. 9 Redlands University on Saturday, August 30, at 2:00 p.m. You can get more information on the team here: Stevens’ Men’s Soccer.

Stevens Athletics Calendar – Now Available

This is completely unofficial so far and is not distributed through Stevens Athletics but from what the publicly available schedules for the teams at the Stevens Athletics web page states, I have created a .ics file that can be easily added to any calendar application (I use Microsoft Outlook) if you want to keep track of the Stevens’ Athletics events. To download the calendar, just simply click here: Stevens Athletics Calendar.ics

Also, watch several Stevens Athletics games that are broadcasted and streamed live on Empire8.tv. I will try to do as many games I possibly can but that might be difficult as I am away from campus for the fall as I complete my co-op semester. I know for sure that I will be doing Men’s Soccer games in the fall and definately the Men’s Lacrosse games and Women’s Basketball games that carry over into the spring semester next year but as for others, I make no guarantees right now.

As for the calendar, so far the only available schedules that I saw were the following:

Men’s Lacrosse
Men’s Soccer
Women’s Basketball
Women’s Tennis

Stevens Coach To Commentate For NBC At The 2008 Beijing Olympics

Well this is some great news out of Stevens Athletics. I really did not expect to follow the fencing events but I think I am going to be watching some of them now to see Coach Sankofa and what he has to say. The original link to the article is here by Rich Coyne.

HOBOKEN, N.J. (May 20, 2008) – Head Coach Maestro Mika’il Sankofa of the Stevens Institute of Technology men’s fencing team has been selected as the NBC analyst for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. With over 30 years of experience in the sport of fencing, Sankofa was selected for his expertise as a competitor, coach and commentator at the national fencing competitions.

“This is really a tremendous honor and I’m really looking forward to calling the various fencing events,” said Sankofa. “America is sending some very talented athletes to the Olympics, and I’m looking forward to educating viewers – new to the sport – as well as bringing the excitement that Olympic fencing competitions always generate.”

A U.S. Fencing Hall of Famer and member of the 1984, 1988 and 1992 U.S. Olympic fencing teams, Sankofa will be calling the Women’s Individual Sabre event scheduled to air on the USA network on Saturday, August 9. Then on August 14, the Women’s Sabre Team event will be broadcasted on MSNBC followed by the Men’s Sabre Team event on August 17.

In 2007, Sankofa was featured in the NCAA’s 100-year commemorative book. He was recognized for having won four consecutive national championships as a New York University student-athlete marking his accomplishment as one of the 50 greatest moments in NCAA history. Furthermore, Sankofa has posted 34 wins through his four years as head coach of the Ducks. He recently helped to produce the first foilist in Stevens’ history to have advanced to the NCAA Finals.

Angry Brown… Horse? and Hal on Fox News

So yesterday was the 134th running of the Kentucky Derby and Big Brown just ran away from the field. I was around some Reading, Pennsylvania and totally missed the running but caught the race later. It was sad to hear when filly Eight Belles followed a sensational effort of her own to finish second by fracturing both ankles, falling to the track and being euthanized on the spot.

It’s certainly the fastest two minutes or so in sports and for those of you who did not get a chance to see it, i have attached it below. I know some people who say this is an awful sport and its understandable that they say it cause like me probably the only horse races they watch are the 3 major ones and certainly the news of Barbaro is still probably fresh in their minds. However, this seems like a really beautiful sport and honestly if I was bogged down in so many other things, I would probably watch more races.

In other news, Stevens Institute of Technology President Hal Raveche was on Fox News on the first of the month to talk about the struggling economy and what the foreign markets think of the falling dollar. He had interesting points which were countered by a professor from NYU and a couple of people from Fox News. He talks about innovation, preparing the students in his university for the world out there (coincidentally the arson incident is taking place about a week before when supposedly he was overseas.)

At Stevens? Really?

So as most of you know I am currently an undergraduate student at Stevens Institute of Technology where it is pretty safe to say has a lot of diverse people from all over the place. So imagine my shock when I hear the following conversation as I walk out of my Political Science class this morning. I was walking in front of two guys and never looked back to see who they were.

Guy 1: So for not being a morning person, that guy was totally bouncing off the wall.

Guy 2: Yea, everyone told me to take a “Wharton” class but what everyone failed to mention was that he was BLACK!

Let me give some background information for those who are not familiar with Wharton. He is a professor here at Stevens while currently getting his Ph.D. from Howard University down in Washington D.C. He is one of the most energetic personalities on campus and certainly a great professor to be taught from. I have had him now for several classes (Sixties: Decade of the Protest, Political Science II, Modern East Asian Studies). He always keeps his classes lively, he seems to fit in like a regular student and you probably would not even know he is a professor if you saw him the first time. So certainly, comments like that up there take you back about the bias and the perceptions people form only from a person’s skin color. It is disgusting.

It is my third year here and it had been pretty good but it just goes to show people like that are still all over the place and maybe somethings will never change.
